SHOCK WAVES

Shock waves are high-energy hypersonic acoustic waves that generate a pressure difference between the media through which it travels, promoting tissue regeneration and repair.

The shock waves interact with the tissue promoting its accelerated repair and cell growth in a non-invasive way.

Most common indications include:

  • Painful shoulder
  • Epicondylalgia
  • Achilodynia
  • Tendinopathies
  • Calcaneal spur
  • Low back pain
  • Calcifications
  • Plantar fasciitis

In most cases, 5 to 7 shock wave treatment sessions are required at 1 week intervals. Shock wave therapy is generally well tolerated by patients if the energy level is gradually increased and the frequency is adjusted to the patient’s sensitivity to pain.

During shock wave therapy there are a cascade of beneficial effects, including:

  • Analgesic effect
  • Decreased muscle tension
  • Inhibition of spasms
  • Hyperemia

Hyperemia provides a better supply of energy to hypertonic muscles and their ligamentous structures through increased blood flow to the area. Likewise, it causes a decrease in pathological interactions between actin and myosin. This leads to a significant reduction in muscle tension.
